The Power of the Madness… Get to know me!
July 29, 2008 by J.C. Hewitt
Google recently updated their site rankings (a gauge of a site’s quality and popularity). It was the first update since the end of Blogging Madness and I’m proud to announce that this year’s competitors rose from an average ranking of 3.75 to 4.15. Here is a list of the sites that rose in the rankings. Congratulations to all of them.
Writers Write rose from five to six
Bob Bly Copywriter rose from five to six
Men with Pens rose from one to five
The Renegade Writer rose from four to five
Confident Writing rose from four to five
All Freelance Writing rose from three to four
Book Marketing Bestsellers rose from one to four
Quiet Rebel Writer rose from one to four
C. Hope Clark rose from three to four
Write From Home rose from two to three
Writer’s Notes rose from one to three
The Writing Journey rose from one to three
Words on the Water rose from one to three

Kudos to all! Taking part in the madness was obviously in our best interests after all

*blink* Um, dude. Men with Pens rose from a FOUR to a five. I think you missed the other update in between the updates.
Heh. Not that it matters. I’m being anal.
You doing the madness next yer, by the way?
@ Joanna,
A little madness can be good for you.
@ James
Well, that may be. I made the PR list as the basis for my rankings, and I hadn’t checked it again until I saw your post and Jeanne’s post. I can safely say that you have risen that far “since” the Madness. As for next year, I will probably do it, but people will have to actually sign up this time. I want a more involved list of contestants. Let me know if you are interested in co-hosting. Of course, you couldn’t be a contestant then, but you could put your sharpshooter skills to use.
Wow – thanks for the update John, and congrats to all! It was a terrifically fun experience…

John,
Though you assigned Writer’s Notes PR 1 for calculation purposes during March Madness, its actual PR was 0 at the time (though it rose to PR 2 in early May). In any event, since March Madness, Writer’s Notes’ PR has risen three points (from PR 0 to PR 3).
Thanks for listing all the blog tournament participants whose PR has increased! That’s always great news!
Many congratulations to everyone!
Jeanne
@ QRW
It was fun. I got to know a lot of writers through the contest and I think it has helped my blog in many ways, including a move up from a page rank of five to a page rank of six.
@ Jeanne
Thank you. I had forgotten that a lot of sites were assigned ones rather than their actual zeros. That makes the rise even more dramatic!
John,
Thanks for holding March Madness. I had no clue how my site ranked – didn’t really care at the time. I’ve since made improvements, and I guess rank does matter. You improved writer blog sites as a whole. Feel proud.

Too funny to read the comments here. PR is all over the place, rising and rising again.
@ John – Considering we left our PR4 behind in February to move our domain, yeah, we started with a 0. So who knows what number you saw when you drove by.
As for next year… Hm. Victory versus Glory. Which to choose, which to choose…
Hey, look at that! Good thing you’re paying attention, John, or I wouldn’t have known.
P.S., Having contestants sign up might be a good thing, as I didn’t even know I was part of your contest until Jeanne congratulated me on winning (some round or another).
Shows how slow I am to catch up on reading all the blogs I like….

The real place that you see a difference when your rank rises is in Search results. The more respect Google has for your site, the more likely you are to end up in the top categories for searches that hit your types of content.
@ James
More proof that your strategy works.
@ Amy
Had I known that anyone would pay attention to the Madness, I would have planned it better.
Way cool John! I’m adding my nod to you doing it again. I’m reading so many good blogs thanks to you and your madness.
Thank you very much for posting the update. Why, just the other week I was whining that I had lost all my PR after the redesign.
Still need to work on the link love. Oh joy of joys.
Love the site, it looks…FANTASTIC.

I have a couple blogs I post to irregularly and they went down from PR4 to PR3. I am glad they did because I thought they actually did not deserve 4 when I posted so infrequently. I think since I had 5000 inbound links fomr my blogrolls they were artificially high rankings.
This site is an outstanding Revolution Theme example… are you on Brian Gardner’s “showcase”… I would recommend asking him… you deserve more exposure and you have done a great job with the theme – Regards !
