Though I am not dependent on the government or any agency for support, that doesn't make my affliction any less of an illness. The problem with a mental illness is that to most people, if they can't see it, it isn't there. I call it the "invisible wheelchair." I appreciate the reminder to have compassion for others even when we are worried about ourselves. I would also like to add that serious mental illness can strike anyone from any class, background, profession, or lifestyle. As you say, it's the people without social, family, or financial safety nets that end up being the most visible and in the streets. Thank you for writing about the seriously mental ill.
