Poetry Dot Shaft
March 24, 2006 by J.C. Hewitt
I just read yet another story about someone who had a bad experience with Poetry.com, otherwise known as the International Library of Poetry. These people make a profit by publishing just about ay poem sent to them, and having the people who have been published buy the books from them. I’ve said it before, but I’ll probably have to say it again. If someone who publishes your poems in print won’t even let you have a free copy, you’re getting the shaft. No one but the people who write the poems inside buy these books. No one would. The poems inside are bad.
Even if your poem is good, it will be surrounded by rubbish from other writers who were published merely to get them to buy a copy. Stay away from Poetry.com and be careful before you commit to any poetry publisher who will not give you at least one free copy of the publication your work appears in. For the best possible list of legitimate poetry publishers, consult Writer’s Digest’s Poet’s Market.

Wish I had read this first. Poetry.com has 14 of my poems. I’ve received notice that I won 2 Editor’s Awards and that my work would be recorded. I could get a copy for a fee. I also received notice that 3 of my poems would be published in their anthology. I haven’t purchased anything. However, I am calling them tomorrow to ask them to remove my work from their site and not to publish in their book. I’ll see what happens when I call and ask for extension 2. Thanks for the information on how to try and have this done without getting scammed. Are the copyrights that Poetry.com provides legit.?
Please, i just want to know if my poetry is any good. I’ve been writing for a while now and I do have one poem on poetry.com….but i don’t think anyone cares for it much.
I just want to know if it helps people deal with things in different ways. It is called who’s to blame ..can someone please be honest with me for a change? I would appreicate it very much.
Thank you Sincerely,
Amber Lynn Petersen
