PD30 Day 19: A Glossary of Rhyme
September 19, 2008 by John Hewitt
We’ll get into a discussion of the pros and cons of rhyme tomorrow, but for now I want to make sure we are working from the same set of definitions.
Rhyme: a repetition of identical or similar sounds in two or more different words.
End Rhyme: The use of rhyming words at the end of two or more lines of a poem. This is what people traditionally think of when they think of rhyming poetry.
The dog ran away from the cat
What do you think about that?
Internal Rhyme: The use of rhyme within the same line of poetry.
The cat sat on the mat
Slant Rhyme: The use of words that have similar endings but are not quite an exact rhyme, usually because the vowel sound is slightly off. Slant rhyme is also called off rhyme, squint rhyme, or virtual rhyme.
The dog ran away from the cat
The pig was so mad he could spit
Vowel Rhyme: Rhyme in which only the vowel sounds in words match. This is also called assonance.
The dog ran away from the cat
This made the pig very sad
Masculine Rhyme: Rhyming words in which the stress is on the last syllable of the rhyme.
When the dog began to comply
The cat chose not to reply
Feminine Rhyme: Rhyming words in which the stress is on the second to last syllable of the rhyme.
Chasing dogs made the cat happy
Just as it did his old pappy
Sight Rhyme: The use of words that look similar but do not actually rhyme.
Although the dog begged quite simply
The cat would not comply
Today’s Poetry Prompt
Write a poem that uses something other than traditional end rhyme.

The Meaning Woare or Less
Onomatopoeia’s fine
Divine that Pop and Buzz would be
So freely transcendentalized
And mental eyes can shut, be nil.
But slangish language languishes
And squisheth in the soundling soup
A poop-poor eekish argot, snide-
And wide-maligned for Scat or Stilt.
So smelt those peons dilettantish
If an auntish soul advises,
But surmise as Kantish moron
And/or on the slant or build.
Grade School Headache Time
The boy found joy with the toy.
But it was not to last alas.
Soon he lost it and was sad
But he knew it wasn’t far.
His older brother found the toy easily
And wouldn’t give it back wilily
The little brother begged and appealed.
The brother’s heart was only annealed.
Then the little brother got an idea
He knew how to make his brother irate.
He would take the boy’s MP3 player
He would take his turn at being a flayer.
He would take no flak, his brother would give the toy back.
He felt sure he had the knack, and just waited to ransack
‘
He would creep into the brother’s room and get the player
He was sure he’d seen it on his old brown dresser.
This poem makes me realize why people wanted private study.
And I feel more than a bit embarrassed and broody.
I am no good at crossword puzzles either.
Does that mean I can’t write poetry neither?

Call Me Beautiful
Don’t call me
Beautiful
Unless you truly
Believe
So
Don’t call me
Beautiful
Unless you truly
Think
So
Don’t pretend
To find me
Beautiful
I know
My own
Worth
I need not
Your
Affirmation
So why
Then
Do
I still
Care
If you
Call me
Beautiful?
a word
has so much meaning
just call out my name
and ask me again
and tell me who it belongs to
and repeat it over and over again
just call out my name
make it pur when you say it
repeat it until you mean what you say
like you enjoy it connotation
do not make me a pet name
call out my real name
until you not want no other
like you mean you need me
i remind you of your mom
we have the same name
so do not forget the word in my name
has potential meaning
it is not only a word
it becomes a moritorium
