Their Program Description:
The aim of the Creative Writing program at The Ohio State University is to help graduate students develop to the fullest their talents and abilities as writers of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, and to help them achieve eventual publication. Most creative writing classes are conducted in a workshop and/or tutorial manner, with major emphasis given to manuscripts written by the students themselves.
The M.F.A. degree must be completed within six calendar years of a student’s entry into graduate study at Ohio State. Three years of GA funding (TA, RA, AA, or Fellowship) may be applied to the completion of the M.F.A. degree. Normally, the degree is completed within five to seven quarters of full-time graduate work. Students who do not complete the degree within six years must work out a plan for resuming their studies with the Graduate Committee.
Students work with our resident faculty, and may also study the writing of fiction, poetry and nonfiction with distinguished Visiting Writers, usually two per year. These writers of national and international stature offer week-long short courses for academic credit and deliver a public reading. Recent visitors have been Dorothy Allison, Russell Banks, John Barth, Chana Bloch, Frederick Busch, Ron Carlson, Billy Collins, Nicholas Delbanco, Alice Fulton, Brenda Hillman, Edward Hirsch, Nick Hornby, Maxine Hong Kingston, Maxine Kumin, Phillip Lopate, Alison Lurie, Michael Martone, Alice McDermott, Heather McHugh, Carol Muske, Marilyn Nelson, Tim O’Brien, Robert Olmstead, Tillie Olsen, Jay Parini, Carl Phillips, Robert Pinsky, Wyatt Prunty, Mary Robison, Josef Skvorecky, David St. John, Chase Twichell, and Geoffrey Wolff.
