But I was not always successful because of fear of hurting the other person. I thought that who I was was depended upon the opinions of people. So I would allow my personal bounderies to be crossed. I am learning fast the people don't hold the key to my future and they don't identify who I really am. So if I offend or disappoint people it is not the end of the world or the end of me. This way of thinking was apart of me all of my life but I didn't realize it until now. Better late than never right? But with the help of God I am getting better. Also, I agree that leaving a relationship, and I want to add that it may even be a family member, is the painful/best way to cope. It gives the other person time to think about the behaviours that caused you to "step out", which is my term, allowing me the option to step back into a relationship if that can occur later. A lot of people like to take advantage of people who doesn't have some sort of boundaries set up. Don't open yourself up for abusive people. However, it's also important to know when to go beyond your boundaries. There are times when you're presented with an opportunity and you don't realize it because of your boundaries. That's a missed opportunity right there. So instead of putting up a wall for a boundary, set up a screen door instead so you can see what's happening outside your boundaries.
