Summary

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief Operating Officer, Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, Curator Division. The incumbent is responsible for writing, rewriting, editing and producing reports and educational/informational materials for print and electronic publication (i.e., on AOC Web site) regarding the activities of the Architect of the Capitol, the history of the Capitol and the works of art and architecture under the care of the AOC. Responsibilities

This is a career ladder position requiring the selectee to perform progressively more complex duties and responsibilities leading to the full performance level.

MAJOR DUTIES 

Writes, rewrites and edits educational/informational materials about the history of the Capitol and its works of art and the activities of the AOC for the Congress and the public, such as fact sheets, press releases, signage, exhibit text and labels, responses to academic inquiries, content for the AOC web site and letters and memoranda. Also writes, rewrites and edits reports for publication and for the information of Congress and the public regarding the activities of the Architect of the Capitol. Effects or coordinates the printed and electronic distribution of the above materials.

Acquires necessary information by researching written and electronic documentation and interviewing AOC staff and consultants; organizes, analyzes, selects and summarizes the information to be presented; determines the logical and effective sequence of thoughts and ideas; determines the level and tone of the work in terms of its objectives and the medium in which it is to be presented; and composes the manuscript.

Plans, designs and creates text and graphics documents, using text-processing, image-processing and modification and page-layout software (Microsoft Word; Corel WordPerfect; and Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat).

Responds, as appropriate, to comments and inquiries received by electronic mail (e-mail) from AOC and congressional staff and from the public.

Edits and proofreads correspondence and other written material produced by the staff in the Curator’s office. Ensures effectiveness of presentation, accuracy of information, consistency of style and correctness of grammar; makes improvements as appropriate.

Assists and coordinates with the Supervisory Museum Curator, other staff members and the Communications and Congressional Relations (CCR) staff regarding ways to implement office publication, educational/informational and other goals.

Assists the Supervisory Museum Curator carry out the overall mission of the division and the AOC in a productive and timely manner.

Uses The Museum System (TMS) collection-management database to locate information about heritage assets under AOC care; adds information to database from authoritative sources.

The incumbent is responsible for utilizing a thorough knowledge of and compliance with applicable AOC and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner and to initiate or take corrective action on unsafe conditions in managed areas.
