Blogging as a Publishing Business: Photo Blogs

June 26, 2007 by J.C. Hewitt

A photo blog is just what it sounds like. The primary emphasis of the blog is on pictures. There are sometimes descriptive stories that go with the pictures, but just as often there aren’t. Flickr.com is an example of a photo blogging service.

These blogs are hard to generate revenue with for two reasons. The first problem is that context-based advertising doesn’t work well with pictures because there is so little data on which to base the ads. The second problem is that pictures draw the focus of the eye so thoroughly that advertising has a hard time capturing anyone’s attention.

About the only way to profit from a photo blog is to generate an enormous amount of traffic. That can be done, but generally only by using half or fully naked people in the pictures. If that is your goal, you are on your own.
