Great post. I think web sites and blogs can be a great way to build up sources of income. However, so much of what you read is about get rich quick schemes that don't work for most people. For me, and I think most people, the real aim should be to slowly build up a source of income. I think $17,000 is very impressive. Yes (for those of us in the USA) that is not enough to live on comfortably. But as a partial source of income it is significant.

And when you create high quality content that content has a long shelf life. $17,000 from 700 hours is very good I think when you consider that you own the future revenue that effort will generate. That can be very significant (and often can out earn your earnings for the year).

I suppose to be accurate in your situation, probably some of the $17,000 is really money earned from work in previous years but still the idea that you are being paid not only your earnings from this year but you are investing in creating a future stream of income. The future potential varies a great deal but site like poewar I believe have very strong long term potential. I would guess you could stop working on it altogether and after a dip in visits over time you would steadily keep increasing visits. That is the value of truly valuable content.
