Arizona Daily Star Goes From Sad to Pathetic

December 12, 2007 by J.C. Hewitt

Just last week I was bemoaning my local newspaper’s horrible decision to restrict access to its web site. As if that weren’t depressing enough, this week brought more bad news. The Star is suffering from an advertising shortfall (no surprise there) and has decided that the solution is to eliminate 11 editorial staff members just in time for Christmas. The newly unemployed staff includes reporters, copy editors and designers. That means the newspaper’s already thin quality is going to drop even more. I don’t know what the corporate geniuses think this will solve, but at this pace, the newspaper will soon be down to just running wire stories and sports. There was a time when Tucsonans were proud of their local newspapers, but that era has long passed. Tucson newspapers are on their last legs. Enough said. Rant over.
